It persistently lumbered through a green forest, its rusty iron feet squeaking as they were dragged across the dewey forest floor. As it walked through the treacherous wood, it was surrounded by the song of nature: birds singing and rain tapping against greenery.
The robot eventually came upon a mighty tree, its gnarled branches reaching every which way. It took a moment before approaching the tree, rainwater dripping down its tattered "armour."
The robot then asked a question, “Why am I not human?”
The only response was the enduring euphony of the forest.
“I understand that not everyone can be, but shouldn’t I want to be who I am?”
Once again, its only answer was the forest's melodic sounds.
The robot expelled a puff of murky exhaust, in what one could perceive as a form of sighing. It then sat on the forest floor with a creak and a clunk - its rusty parts protesting against every movement. It sat there in silence, staring at the mighty tree.
After a moment, the tree began to emit a soft glow. Through the glow, the robot could see what appeared to be a large eyeball with its bright yellow iris and rich brown pupil. The eye began to weep, and as it wept, the glow swelled more and more, until the eye was no longer visible.
The blinding glow began to diminish and where there once sat the mighty tree and its weeping eye, now sat a dog. It appeared to be a Neapolitan Mastiff, its white fur creeping down its droopy jowls.
“You are already human,” it said.
The robot was stunned: its pixelated eyes grew in size; sparks flew from its core. It couldn’t believe it.
As it spoke, the dog’s eyes glowed the same as the tree once did, “You have humanity in your heart. If that is not what makes a human then I do not know what would”
A moment of silence, only the song of nature around.
“I don't believe you,” the robot muttered, as streams of rust-coloured murk flowed down its cold, plated cheeks. The rainwater washed away the murk almost as fast as it flowed. It sat there, still surrounded by birds singing their song and rain tapping harshly against lush greenery.
