I don't know how well known this show even is, but everyone should watch Kevin Can Fuck Himself (stylized as "Kevin Can F**k Himself" or "Kevin Can F Himself" since it originally aired on AMC, a major TV channel.) The premise alone should make anyone want to watch it. It's about a woman (named Allison) who's unhappy in her marriage with her horrible husband (the titular Kevin) and wants to get out, by any means necessary.
Something I absolutely love about the show is that it's split into two styles: One in the style of a very grounded one-camera crime drama with very desaturated and dark colour grading; While the other is in the style of a multi-cam sitcom with very saturated and bright colour grading and a live audience. Every scene that Kevin is in, the show is presented in the sitcom style, but every time we leave whatever environment that Kevin is in, it switches to the more dark, serious style. It adds such a fun contrast to the show. Like, just look at these two shots, one in the sitcom style, the other in the serious one:
The show also does something that a few shows have been doing recently that I LOVE, which is having each episode have a unique title card. I loved seeing it in Our Flag Means Death, and I'm so happy to see it in other shows. All the title cards in Kevin Can Fuck Himself are so cool, but it's hard not to have favourites, and I'll put some of those at the end of this blog post.
Another thing I love about Kevin Can Fuck Himself is the characters. They all act differently between the two styles and it's so genuinely cool seeing all the characters go from goofy and one-dimensional in the sitcom style to flawed and fully rounded in the serious one.
I don't want to put any major spoilers here since I want people to be able to watch the full show with almost no knowledge beforehand, but just know that I love this show so much. The first season feels so perfect to me from start to finish. Of course, because the show was so unique and had such love put into it, it was cancelled before the second season even aired. They did the best they could, but you can definitely feel that there was more they wanted to do with the show and that they just had to work with the one more season they were given. I think three seasons would've been the perfect amount for the show, but honestly I'm just glad they were able to give the show a real ending instead of being cancelled after a huge cliff-hanger.
I don't know what it's like in other regions, but in Canada, the first season is available on Prime Video, and both seasons are available on AMC+. You of course could also watch it other ways, but if you do, please send me a link.
I hope this blog post urges at least one more person to watch this show. It really deserves a bigger audience. I'm probably gonna make a more ramble-y post full of spoilers in the future, but we'll see lmao. Anyways, here's my favourite title cards:
All the title cards were made by Krystal Sojourner, who you can check out at her website
